January 2013 Report - Our visit to Acheru and looking at the future of the work.
Hazel and I are now in Uganda for our long anticipated visit to Acheru. We always enjoy getting to Uganda, but everything moves on and it’s our hope that in future other committee members will go out to represent Africare, and see for themselves the work being done. We’ve a lot to think about as Acheru has developed within a very short time and we want now to look at details which may not have been properly considered before. We want to ensure that development which was completed in a hurry can now receive the attention necessary to ensure that everything is finished to a good standard. There is also the work in the north to think about – recruitment of personnel, and establishment of our new unit at Minakulu.
There are many practical issues to deal with relating to buildings, vehicles and equipment, but of greater concern is Africare’s relationship with the staff, and how we prepare for the future. We are discussing Acheru’s management structure, which has been weakened by the murder of Apollo, and by Paul going away to study. We are first of all ensuring we all share a common vision for the work being undertaken, before looking at how the management committee can perhaps be strengthened to deal with future needs.
We will of course also be looking at budgets, but it’s a tribute to you as donors, and the continuing blessing this work has experienced, that we still face the future with confidence, and maintain our aim of never having to turn a child away because of financial constraints.
